The NYS Health Department has revoked the license of Staten Island plastic surgeon Robert Cattani, according to the New York Daily News. According to the report, Cattani has had at least forty separate medical malpractice suits filed against him during his career. The Health Department cited the doctor for gross negligence.
A gross negligence standard requires that an individual commit “a voluntary act or omission in reckless disregard of a legal duty and of the consequences to another party.” Blacks Law Dictionary. From the alleged facts of several of the incidents involving Cattani, a case can be made that he surpassed this threshold. He allegedly left one patient blind in one eye after a procedure on her eyelids. Another patient reportedly almost bled to death after a tummy-tuck. If these and other stories like them are true, Cattani meets the gross negligence threshold, and has almost certainly violated his Hippocratic Oath as well.
